Wind Turbine Training in Paonia, CO

I had the opportunity to attend a wind power class in beautiful Paonia, Colorado.

A five-day overview of wind turbine systems, this in-depth course taught the anatomy, physics, construction and economics of wind-powered electric generating systems.

Paonia is a charming town full of great people.   Solar Energy International is located there with a workshop campus and classroom.  SEI is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people from all over the world about the benefits of renewable energy equipment.  They also teach actual hands-on procedures for site analysis, sizing and commissioning the equipment.

After four days in the classroom, we were able to tour some of the smaller wind installations in and around Paonia.    From various points in the North Fork Valley, we observed the classic mountain/valley diurnal wind pattern.  Visiting several operating turbines was an excellent chance to check out how all of the various systems integrate in the real world.

I am hopeful that the knowledge I gained at SEI will come in handy with E & M’s future endeavors in the large scale wind industry.

Race for the Cure 2010

Twenty-one E & M employees, friends and family joined over 50,000 participants in Sunday’s Race for the Cure in downtown Denver.  We walked in celebration of Kim Maynes, a six-year breast cancer survivor.  Thanks to Kim’s hard work, the team raised $2,100 for breast health, care and research.  Over $1 million was raised at the event.  Women, men, children and dogs all ran or walked in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation – wearing all shades of pink.  There were pink shirts, wigs, feather boas, tutus and even a flamingo costume.  It was an inspiring sight to see the mass of people walking to find a cure for breast cancer.

It’s not too late to donate.  Go to E & M’s Race for the Cure website here.
